AI big focus of SU-30MKI upgrade; IAF taking up pilot projects with IIT-Mumbai, says officer

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up to significantly upgrade its Su-30MKI fighters, incorporating advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as part of the modernization process.

This upgrade will focus on enhancing operational capabilities with new avionics, onboard radars possibly equipped with active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, and an advanced electronic warfare (EW) suite.

In collaboration with IIT-Mumbai, the IAF is initiating pilot projects to explore and integrate AI applications within these upgrades. These projects aim to leverage AI for improved decision-making, mission planning, and overall aircraft performance, reflecting a broader trend towards incorporating cutting-edge technology in military aviation.

The Su-30MKI, a cornerstone of the IAF's combat fleet, will thus see significant enhancements, ensuring it remains competitive and capable in modern aerial warfare scenarios. The details of these upgrades and their timelines are still under development, but they mark a critical step towards modernizing India's air defense capabilities.
