Momos are a popular snack originating from Tibet and are widely enjoyed across the Himalayan region, including Nepal and parts of India. These delightful dumplings are filled with a variety of ingredients and can be steamed, fried, or even boiled. Here's a simple recipe to help you make mouthwatering momos at home!
Ingredients
For the Dough:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Water (as needed)
For the Filling:
1 cup finely chopped vegetables (cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, and spring onions)
1/2 cup minced chicken or tofu (optional for a vegetarian version)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Salt to taste
1 tablespoon oil
Chopped coriander (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add water and knead the mixture into a smooth and firm dough.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes. This helps in making the dough pliable.
2. Prepare the Filling
In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
Add the chopped vegetables (and minced chicken or tofu if using) and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are slightly cooked but still crunchy.
Add soy sauce, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and cook for another minute. Remove from heat and let it cool.
3. Shape the Momos
Divide the rested dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball).
Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 3-4 inches in diameter. The edges should be thinner than the center.
Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle.
4. Seal the Momos
Gently fold the edges of the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges together to seal tightly.
For a decorative touch, you can pleat the edges by folding them over several times.
5. Cooking the Momos
Steaming Method:
Prepare a steamer and line it with parchment paper or lightly oil it to prevent sticking.
Place the momos in the steamer and steam for about 15-20 minutes until the dough is cooked and translucent.
Frying Method:
Heat oil in a pan. Once hot, add the momos and fry until golden brown, turning occasionally.
6. Serve with Dipping Sauce
Momos are best served hot with a spicy dipping sauce. You can make a simple sauce using chopped tomatoes, green chilies, and coriander, blended with salt and a splash of lemon juice.
Making momos at home is a fun and rewarding culinary experience. With this easy recipe, you can enjoy these delicious dumplings any time you crave them. Feel free to experiment with different fillings, such as paneer, mushrooms, or even mixed meats, to find your perfect flavor combination. Enjoy your homemade momos with family and friends!
