Iran Hasn't Decided To Build A Nuclear Weapon, Believes US

The United States still believes that Iran has not decided to build a nuclear weapon despite Tehran's recent strategic setbacks, including Israel's killing of Hezbollah leaders and two largely unsuccessful attempts to attack Israel, two US officials told Reuters.

U.S. intelligence officials maintain that Iran has not made the decision to pursue nuclear weapons. This assessment follows recent strategic shifts in the region, including Israeli military actions against Hezbollah. CIA Director William Burns stated that there is no evidence suggesting that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reversed his earlier decision to suspend weaponization efforts, which he enacted in 2003.

Despite Iran's advancements in uranium enrichment—currently at 60% purity, close to weapons-grade levels—U.S. officials assert that they would likely detect any movement towards building a nuclear weapon. Burns emphasized that producing a bomb's worth of material could be achieved relatively quickly, yet constructing an actual nuclear warhead would take considerably longer.

Overall, while tensions remain high, particularly with calls for military action against Iran's nuclear facilities, U.S. intelligence suggests a cautious outlook regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions
