Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Nihon Hidankyo for group's work toward abolition of nuclear weapons

"This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in their announcement.

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese NGO formed by survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha. This recognition highlights their dedicated efforts to advocate for the abolition of nuclear weapons and to raise awareness of the devastating impacts of nuclear warfare

Established in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo has played a significant role in promoting nuclear disarmament, particularly in the context of increasing global tensions surrounding nuclear armament. As the world approaches the 80th anniversary of the bombings, this award underscores the urgency of their message against nuclear proliferation

The chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, emphasized the importance of this recognition amidst growing concerns about the use of nuclear weapons in contemporary conflicts.
