Smuggler reveals operation to help Vietnamese reach UK

He has been in prison, led a gang working on the northern coast of France, and claims to have helped more than 1,000 people to risk their lives to cross the Channel.

A Vietnamese smuggler has claimed involvement in helping around 1,000 individuals reach the UK by crossing the English Channel. He described the dangerous journeys undertaken, where migrants often face overcrowded boats and life-threatening conditions. As Vietnamese nationals now represent the largest group of illegal crossings, many are driven by desperation and threats from local gangs back home. The UK's Rwanda deportation policy has caused mixed reactions, with some migrants shifting their plans to other countries out of fear of deportation.

The recent UK policy of deporting migrants to Rwanda has caused anxiety, leading some to abandon their plans to reach the UK. As a result, many are now considering routes to Germany instead.

A prolific Vietnamese people smuggler, who entered the UK illegally this year in a small boat, has told the BBC he forges visa documents for other Vietnamese who plan to make the same crossing.

The man, whom we are calling Thanh, is now claiming UK asylum and told us he has spent almost 20 years - his entire adult life - in the smuggling industry.
